The Last Leaf

The last leaf of winter fell down today.

I watched it fall; saw it swirl, twirl, and sway,

And land on the ground where it joined its kin,

And then sombre thoughts began to set in.

Of all the leaves that have fallen before,

Generations gone, and there goes one more.

Another lifetime, the blink of an eye,

Another cycle has now said goodbye.

There’ll come another, just wait and you’ll see.

They’ll think they’re immortal, special and free,

They’ll care not a bit for what came before,

Springtime will hold them enraptured, in awe.

Then autumn will come, their colours will turn,

For green days gone by, they then will all yearn.

Some other will watch the next last leaf fall,

To land on the ground that catches them all.

At the Jazz Bar

The neon glows above the bar,

The players crowd the stage.

The music needs not travel far,

To splash upon this page.

Its melody is poetry,

Its rhythms form pure prose.

The quill it dances merrily,

From opening ’til close.

The arrangements form a thesis,

An essay from its notes.

The audience falls to pieces,

While hearing what they wrote.

And yet still the songs keep coming,

The words spill on and on.

And the quill will keep on humming,

Long after they have gone.

Goodbye

What’s that you say? It is time you must leave?

But it’s still so early, so I believe.

Don’t you dare go, don’t you dare go away,

Everyone here really wants you to stay.

I must say, it’s been so nice to know you,

You say it’s been lovely to know me too?

Don’t make me say it – I would say ’til then –

Alas, goodbye, though we’ll not meet again.

Can’t I hug you once more, ere you depart?

I’ll hold you always, here close to my heart.

So much we’ve talked, oh so much we have done,

I would talk more – we’ve more races to run.

Stay a while longer, take a load off your feet,

Oh no, here’s your car, coming down the street.

Where are you going? Can I please come too?

No, not this time, this trip’s only for you.

You don’t want to go? Of that I am sure.

You are so weary, but there is no cure.

I’ll help you along, lean on my shoulder,

You must go now, before you get older.

Can’t you please stay here, just one moment more?

No look, your chauffeur has opened the door,

And now the Reverend has spoken your name,

Do not feel guilty, you are not to blame.

Please stay for now, we’re not ready to part,

If you leave now it will shatter my heart.

But no, that is selfish, and you must leave,

Though I’ll cry oceans and most surely grieve.

Must I go too? Yes the curtains are drawn,

I must turn away and face a new dawn,

So now I leave you, the last place you lie,

For the last time, farewell and goodbye.

Sunset Ride

Wine-red blood streaks across the sky

As another long day lays down to die

The evening is cool, not too cold

An eerie feeling begins to take hold

A black leather clad fever dream

Riding this lightning suicide-machine

Built from black metal and sleek chrome

Many ghosts follow, but I ride alone

So many thoughts, memories, dreams

Out here they’re nothing, they fall through the seams

I can out-run them, if I try

So I ride so fast I’m starting to fly

Into that streak of blood red sky

A hint of blue as the sky starts to cry

I ride toward that blood red death

With anticipation and bated breath

Red taillights glare hot ahead

Like lanterns dragged by the souls of the dead

My snarling beast glints black as night

Chrome shining silver like early moonlight

The lights of town flicker ahead

They chase off the dreams and clear my head

Yes the warm streetlights have their say

And they remind me of the coming day

So I get home, take off my boots

Sit down inside as my soul slowly droops

And sit and dream of the next time

I can race the sun to die in the sky

Where is God?

Where is God?

Is he in the air, the howling wind’s cry?

In the ground, or the everlasting sky?

I do not know

Where is God?

Is she in the smile of a little child?

Traipsing city streets, or out running wild?

I do not know

Where is God?

Are they found on the bright face of the moon?

There right away, and then gone oh so soon?

I do not know

Where is God?

Is it everywhere at once, in each word?

Nowhere to be seen, be felt, or be heard?

I do not know

Where is God?

Does God exist, is this only my doubt?

Has lack of faith truly driven God out?

I do not know

Where is God?

Is God now dead, did the wise sage speak right?

Is the once-bright world now cast in dark night?

I do not know

Where is God?

And what does that mean, what even is it?

In what part of this world does God’s grace fit?

I do not know

Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time

Gods flew through the sky, riding the lightning

Booming loud, thunderous and frightening

Once upon a time

Forests and valleys would all come alive

Filled with strange things that forever survive

Once upon a time

Brave heroes quested across seas and lands

Weapons and treasures clenched tight in their hands

Once upon a time

Damsels were so sweet, so fine, and so fair

Knights they would fight for a lock of their hair

Once upon a time

Rulers were mighty in armour and helm

But a poet’s words could topple the realm

Once upon a time

Mythology was true, legends real

Curses could harm, and magic could heal

Once upon a time

The world was filled with wonder and whimsy

’til they locked them up and buried the key

All of this was true

The world was filled up with whimsy and rhyme

Yes all this was true, once upon a time

Lost Time

All of that lost time

Like many a long lost rhyme

Forgotten, faded to dust

And so now I must

Cherish every little bit

So that I remember it

Focus on the present now

And the future anyhow

Lay the past to rest

Focus only on the best

Leave forgotten every rhyme

Like so much lost time

A Day in September

September rain pours

Get inside or you’ll be soaked

The wind howls and roars

Weather’s not quite what you’d hoped?

Come in, do you want some coffee or tea?

Sit down and enjoy a cuppa with me

Ode to Summer

This crisp Autumn morning

Came without warning

Well so long Summertime

You were truly sublime

New season is dawning

That is less warming

So farewell Summertime

I will miss your sunshine

Please do hurry back here

And come back next year

Now goodbye Summertime

We will see you next time
